Gilbert Mufandaedza, (27) from Jenya Farm in Karoi, has been doing community service for attempting to bribe a police officer with $5. Mufandaedza was trying to secure the release of his neighbour, Kennedy Chirongoma, who had been arrested for operating an unregistered motorcycle.
Mufandaedza was arraigned before Karoi Magistrate Court.
He was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment of which 3 months was suspended for 5 years. The remaining 3 months were suspended on condition that the accused person performs 105 hours of community service.
Circumstances are that the police officer was on duty when he noticed an unregistered motor cycle belonging to Kennedy Chirongoma and arrested him.
Mufandaedza was arrested for offering a bribe of USD5 to the police officer in an attempt to secure the release of his neighbour who had been arrested for failing to register his motorcycle.
The police officer, having recorded the serial number of the USD5 bill, subsequently apprehended Mufandaedza for bribery.
