The Executive Director of the Ukuna Environmental Association (UEA), a local NGO based in Beitbridge, is proudly representing Zimbabwe at the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan. Linet Ndou , is part of the delegates at the  two-week event which brings together delegates from almost 200 countries to address pressing global climate issues and explore potential solutions.

As one of the selected members of the 2024 Climate Youth Negotiation Party cohort, Ndou stands out as one of just two young negotiators chosen and trained by the Youth Negotiation Academy (YNA). Her participation underscores the vital role that youth play in shaping the future of climate policy and action on a global scale.

In a show of appreciation, the Ukuna Environmental Association took to social media to express their gratitude to the Zimbabwean government for its support and recognition of the importance of training young climate negotiators.

The association wrote on their Facebook page, “We extend our gratitude to the government of Zimbabwe for their support and recognition of the importance of training young climate negotiators. We appreciate the YNA, and the participating nations showcase a united effort towards fostering sustainable climate action and empowering the youth to engage meaningfully in international climate negotiations.”

COP29 is poised to tackle critical issues, including the achievement of new climate finance goals, accelerating the reduction of greenhouse gases, and advancing comprehensive climate change plans that support global objectives.

The conference is a critical platform under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which has united nearly 200 countries in the fight against global warming since the establishment of the 1994 treaty.

The unique nature of COPs lies in their ability to convene governments, civil society, young people, and scientists, all working collaboratively on innovative solutions to combat climate change. Ndou’s participation as a youth negotiator exemplifies the potential impact young leaders can have in shaping effective policies and strategies for a more sustainable future.

As the COP29 conference progresses, the eyes of the world will be on the discussions and commitments made, with hopes that renewed determination and innovative solutions will emerge to address the climate crisis challenges facing our planet.
