Barely a day after President Emmerson Mnangagwa asserted that he will not stay in power beyond his constitutionally mandated time, ZANU PF Manicaland province has decided to move with the tide in the internal politics of the ruling party by having their top resolution towards the Party’s Bulawayo Conference as “Endorsing the President to remain in office beyond 2028.”
This is clearly going against the President’s assertions that are in the public domain that he has no interests in tearing apart a constitution which he contributed to its crafting, the latest one coming on Monday this week when he was addressing Zimbabweans living in China.
Interestingly, ZANU PF Manicaland province’s proffered a reason for wanting the President to stay beyond 2028 teeters on taking the country back to the first Republic days of former President Mugabe where “no one is suitable to pass on the baton to” mantra became the order of the day.
“The President’s leadership as crucial for stability, development, and (attainment of) Vision 2030,” read the bold resolution.
While most provinces had already adopted and endorsed the 2030ist movement, Manicaland was late to officially come to the party. As the annual ZANU PF conference slated for next month draws nearer, the expectation is President will put to rest the issue once and for all to a predominantly ZANU PF audience failure which the Party maybe thrown into days of the Lacoste/G40 factional battles.
As it stands, it seems political tensions are bubbling underground in the ruling Party as revealed by the Cde Christopher Mutsvangwa, the ZANU PF spokesperson. In one of his regular press conferences, Cde Mutsvangwa said the 2030ist movement was borne after the youths realised there were people working with self-exiled G40 members to remove the President.
