A group of renowned musicians and football legend Justice Majabvi visited Chikurubi Maximum Prison yesterday as part of a broader initiative leading up to the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Prison Day celebrations on November 16th.

The event provided more than 3,000 inmates an opportunity to connect with the stars in an atmosphere of joy and reflection.

The lineup featured a diverse array of artists, including Mathias Mhere, Jah Prayzah, Simon Mutambi, Mbeu, Jah Signal, Empress Masina, and Pondo.

The musicians performed two popular tracks by fellow artist Seh Calaz—‘Mabhanditi’ and ‘Kwatinobva Kwakasiyana’—entertaining inmates while also delivering crucial messages of hope and redemption.

Among the inmates was Paul Mwesambuzi, 41, who shared a poignant moment with Seh Calaz as the two recognized each other from their days as neighbors in Mbare.

Mwesambuzi is currently serving a 15-year sentence for murder, making their reunion not only a nostalgic encounter but also a reminder of the unexpected connections that can flourish even in challenging circumstances.

With the presence of 3,071 inmates at Chikurubi, including 351 under the Psychiatric Unit, the visit offered a much-needed respite for those behind bars.

Notably, Jaison Muvhevhi, a former police officer convicted of murder, was among the prisoners enjoying the uplifting atmosphere, sharing light-hearted exchanges with the performing artists.

In addition to the performances, the musicians took the time to address the inmates directly.

Many preached messages of hope and resilience, encouraging inmates to look towards a brighter future.

Preston Maporisa, a prominent music promoter and religious minister, also delivered a heartfelt sermon, offering prayers and words of encouragement to the men in custody.

As the musicians left the prison, the echoes of their music lingered in the air, a testament to hope that resonated deeply within the walls of Chikurubi Maximum Prison.
