SABC is preparing to bid farewell to Muvhango as the soapie officially concludes its remarkable run. After nearly 30 years of captivating audiences, the iconic show will air its final episode on August 8, 2025, marking the end of an era in local storytelling.
Confirmed by SABC 2 and Word of Mouth Productions, Muvhango first graced screens on 7 April 1997.
Created by the talented Duma ka Ndlovu, the show quickly became a cultural phenomenon, introducing viewers to unforgettable characters such as Chief Azwindini, Thandaza, James, Mulalo, KK, and many others who became household names across South Africa.
A trailblazer in promoting indigenous languages, Muvhango was instrumental in bringing the Tshivenda language to the forefront at a time when most dramas centered around more widely spoken dialects.
Reflecting on the show’s legacy, Duma ka Ndlovu shared, “Muvhango gave an opportunity to an ignored language that has become one of the most celebrated languages in South Africa now. It has been a privilege and an honour to create moments on television, where marginalised languages were at the centre of it all.”
Beyond entertainment, Muvhango served as an educational platform and a mirror to South Africa’s evolving identity. Its compelling storylines captured the nation’s transition from apartheid to democracy, blending tradition with modern challenges to foster pride and representation among viewers.
Lala Tuku, Acting Group Executive for Video Entertainment at SABC, praised the show’s enduring impact.
“For almost 30 years, Muvhango has been a pillar of SABC2’s programming and a beloved part of South African television history. More than just a drama, Muvhango has been the champion of language, culture, identity, and national pride, inspiring, entertaining, educating, and uniting audiences across South Africa.”
Though Muvhango will be concluding, a new chapter in local storytelling is on the horizon. While still unconfirmed by SABC, reports suggest that the soapie will be succeeded by Pimville Queens, which is expected to debut on 11 August at 9 pm, promising fresh narratives to keep South Africans engaged.
As fans prepare to bid farewell to a show that has defined generations, the legacy of Muvhango will undoubtedly endure as a cornerstone of South Africa’s rich cultural tapestry and it is understandable why many fans are expressing mixed feelings with some agreeing it was time while others contend their beloved show still had a lot to contribute to the entertainment industry.
