The National Blood Service Zimbabwe (NBSZ) has issued a statement to clarify widespread questions regarding the sale of blood despite the fact that it is donated for free.

The NBSZ explained that while blood is generously donated by individuals without charge, the processes involved in ensuring its safety and availability for transfusion incur significant costs.

According to NBSZ, once blood is donated, it does not go directly to patients. Instead, it undergoes strict testing for infections and blood grouping, is separated into components, stored safely, and then distributed. These essential processes require advanced equipment, skilled personnel, specialized storage facilities, and adherence to international safety standards, all of which require funding.

As a non-profit organization, NBSZ aims to recover only the operational costs related to these processes while ensuring that blood remains accessible to everyone who needs it.

The organization noted that the Government of Zimbabwe has committed to providing blood free of charge to all patients in public hospitals, launching this initiative in 2018 to assist vulnerable groups within public health institutions.

Importantly, NBSZ emphasized that once blood is dispatched to healthcare facilities, it does not have direct control over how the blood is distributed or accessed by patients.

Nevertheless, the organization is dedicated to collaborating with healthcare providers to ensure transparency and efficiency in the blood supply system.

In recognition of the dedication of their blood donors, NBSZ has implemented a Blood Components Beneficiary Policy. This initiative guarantees that donors who have contributed blood ten times or more and have made their last donation within the past year are eligible for free blood for their biological parents, children, or spouse if they require transfusions.

NBSZ reiterated its commitment to support and appreciate blood donors, highlighting that their generosity plays a crucial role in saving lives and promoting public health.

The organization expressed its unwavering resolve to ensure that blood donors are well-catered for, emphasizing the vital contributions they make to the well-being of the nation.
