HARARE – Zimbabwe’s economy has experienced notable growth, with the latest economic census revealing a significant upward revision of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The new figures estimate Zimbabwe’s GDP at ZWL168.5 trillion (approximately US$44.4 billion), a sharp increase from the previous estimate of ZWL133.7 trillion (around US$35.2 billion), highlighting a more dynamic economic landscape.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr. Jenfan Muswere announced this development on Tuesday during a media briefing following the Cabinet meeting.

He explained that the recent census, which covered data from 2023 but was conducted throughout 2024 and into the first quarter of 2025, has provided a more comprehensive picture of Zimbabwe’s expanding economy for the first time in years.

Muswere attributed the upward revision to improved data coverage, including thousands of new business entities that have emerged since 2019 the base year of the previous census. He noted that the broader scope of the survey now captures a wider array of informal and small-to-medium-sized enterprises that are vital drivers of the national economy.

“This growth is not just statistical; it reflects the increasing dynamism of Zimbabwe’s economic sectors,” Muswere said.

The revised GDP figures have also translated into higher Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, which increased from US$2,259 in 2023 to US$2,859 this year. The projections for last year have been revised upwards from US$2,228 to US$2,893, and the government now anticipates per capita income exceeding US$3,000 in 2024.

The positive trajectory aligns with Zimbabwe’s ambition to attain Upper Middle-Income status under its Vision 2030 development blueprint.

Muswere emphasized that these revised figures are expected to boost investor confidence and enhance the accuracy of future fiscal and economic planning.

He also highlighted the importance of conducting more regular and comprehensive economic surveys to keep pace with rapid changes on the ground.

The Zimbabwe Statistical Agency (ZIMSTAT) is expected to release more detailed, sector-specific, and regional economic data in the coming months, offering deeper insights into the country’s economic performance.

The latest census and revised GDP figures mark a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s economic journey, underscoring the country’s resilience and ongoing efforts to build a more prosperous future.
