Former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa has strongly opposed amendments to Zimbabwe’s Constitution that could enable President Emmerson Mnangagwa to surpass his two-term limit and maintain power beyond 2028.
Chamisa, who has been quiet for some time and focused on “trusting God,” spoke out yesterday amid growing pressure from Zanu-PF and a faction within the CCC advocating for an extension of terms for the President, legislators, and councillors by at least five years.
The proposed amendment has sparked outrage, particularly as Mnangagwa previously assured the nation he would step down at the conclusion of his second term.
“STOP THIS NONSENSE!! You want to extend pain and suffering. You want to extend extreme and deadening poverty. You want to extend unemployment, hunger, and lack. You want power outages, electricity shortages, and water shortages. You want to deepen this currency crisis and cash shortages. You want to perpetuate high taxes and skyrocketing prices. You want to extend oppression, fear, hate, and intimidation. You want to normalize terror and violence,” Chamisa passionately declared, highlighting the issues affecting ordinary Zimbabweans.
His sentiments are echoed by Douglas Mwonzora, leader of the MDC-T, who has also voiced strong opposition to the proposed constitutional changes.
Mwonzora warns that eliminating term limits would not only consolidate power in Mnangagwa’s hands but would also exacerbate Zimbabwe’s international isolation.
“This push to extend term limits will send a clear message to the world that Zimbabwe is not serious about democratic principles,” he stated.
Chamisa’s remarks highlight growing opposition to the constitutional amendment among critics who see it as a step backward for democracy in Zimbabwe.
With the nation grappling with economic challenges and strained international relations, the debate over term limits is likely to intensify in the months ahead setting the stage for political contestations that could possibly turn nasty
