South Africans have reacted with anger after it was revealed that illegal miners, known as zama zamas, in Stilfontein are requesting mayonnaise and tomato sauce among other supplies.
According to reports, the miners, who remain underground, sent a letter to authorities asking for a variety of necessities including medication, food, and specific items like mayonnaise, tomato sauce, rice, and tinned fish and beef.
The letter stated: “Greetings, we are asking for bathing soap and Omo washing powder to wash our clothes. We are also asking for roll-on so that we can bathe. We have run out of meat. Please, give us tinned fish and beef.”
A photo of the letter quickly went viral on social media, eliciting astonishment and frustration among users.
Many were taken aback that items like tomato sauce and mayonnaise were included in a list of essential supplies.
Social media comments reflected a mix of outrage and disbelief, with users questioning how such requests could be deemed necessary for survival. Some suggested that the zama zamas appeared to be preparing for a festive season rather than a dire situation.
One commenter remarked, “Are they trying to make salads with our tax? This is the most disrespectful request ever.” Another added, “This looks like a Christmas grocery shopping list! Clearly, those guys are not coming out anytime soon—you might as well send Christmas gifts!”
As the conversation continues, many are left wondering about the miners’ intentions and their plans moving forward. The Stilfontein illegal miners have been trapped underground for over a month as most refuse to come out fearing arrest and possible imprisonment.
