A South African police sergeant is under investigation for failing to charge a woman for alleged public drinking at the Pretoria Central Police Station.
In a statement, the South African Police Service (SAPS) highlighted a video showing a police sergeant exchanging words with an alleged intoxicated woman.
It was noted that the sergeant did not register the case or follow any detention protocols. The incident has drawn the attention of the station management under the leadership of Brigadier Mashaba.
“A preliminary report from an internal investigation revealed that while performing crime prevention duties within the precinct, the sergeant and her crew encountered a person drinking alcohol inside a vehicle. The suspect was brought to the police station in a police vehicle. However, the sergeant did not register a case or follow any detention protocols. The sergeant and the alleged suspect exchanged words in the community service center, and the alleged suspect was eventually released without being charged,” the SAPS statement reads.
The SA Police Service further urged members of the public to report any dissatisfaction with the services they receive from police officers.
