The South African Minister of Transport , Barbara Creecy has directed the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) to investigate DNC bus company’s responsibility in ensuring the roadworthiness of the bus following the Limpopo bus accident which claimed 43 lives.
In a statement on Friday, dated October 17 Creecy said this includes considering a culpable homicide complaint against the bus company regarding the duties of the operator.
Creecy also tasked the RMTC with requesting the maintenance schedule and service records of the specific bus.
“They will work with the Anti-Corruption Unit to establish which road testing center issued a roadworthiness certificate for the bus and check the roadworthiness status of DNC Coach Depots in SA,” she said.
Creecy said the RTMC will liaise with Provincial Law Enforcement Authorities to ensure a compulsory roadside inspection of the DNC Coach Fleet coming through the SA Border Post.
“The investigation will look at what happened at the weigh bridges where the issue of overloading was supposed to have been detected,” she said.
She said during the investigations over speeding contributed more to the bus crush.
“The bus driver drove at a speed too high for the conditions down the mountain pass,” Creecy said.
Creecy further said the RMTC investigation is still ongoing and it will take 21 weeks to complete the final technical reconstruction report.
