Burgersfort, Limpopo – A targeted multi-agency operation in Burgersfort led to the arrest of 12 individuals, the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed in a statement. The operation, carried out on Tuesday, 29 July, was spearheaded by the Sekhukhune District Vala Umgodi Task Team in collaboration with local police, Traffic Police, and Immigration officials.

The joint operation was aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration, unregulated trade, and broader criminal activity plaguing hotspot areas, including the Central Business District (CBD), liquor outlets, and known illegal entry routes into the area.

Of the 12 people apprehended, 11 were arrested for contravening immigration laws. One suspect faces charges related to the possession of illicit cigarettes, and another was detained for assaulting police officers during the operation.

Police seized a substantial quantity of contraband during the raid, including approximately 500 cartons of illegal cigarettes and 200 loose filters products estimated to be worth around R14,000. According to authorities, such goods not only pose health hazards but are often linked to organized criminal networks.

“The confiscated illicit cigarettes pose a significant risk to the community and undermine efforts to maintain lawful economic activity,” said a SAPS spokesperson.

“This operation is part of our ongoing commitment to rooting out crime and protecting the public.”

All suspects remain in custody while investigations continue. The SAPS has urged members of the community to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity.

“Community involvement is essential in creating a safer environment for everyone,” the police emphasized in their statement.

The operation forms part of SAPS’s broader Vala Umgodi strategy, which seeks to dismantle illegal mining and trade operations, enhance immigration enforcement, and strengthen public safety across the Limpopo province.
