Harare— Ambitious businessman and ZANU‑PF benefactor Kudakwashe Tagwirei, founder of Sakunda Holdings, made a dramatic entrance into frontline politics on Wednesday, as he attended his first ZANU‑PF Politburo meeting to present on “resource mobilisation,” according to ZimLive.

This follows his formal co‑option into the party’s Central Committee, officially confirmed in March.

A source within the party told ZimLive that Tagwirei “attended the politburo as the party’s biggest donor to discuss fundraising initiatives to strengthen the party” and revealed that he is providing substantial material support to senior leaders.

According to the insider, Tagwirei has pledged an impressive fleet: 300 off‑road Ford vehicles earmarked for all Central Committee members, Toyota Land Cruiser VX 300s for each of the 49 Politburo members

The gift of such high-value vehicles showcases his intent to tighten his grip on party structures.

Though Tagwirei hasn’t publicly declared any bid for the ZANU‑PF presidency, his recent moves joining the party’s core decision-making body and wooing its senior leadership have sparked speculation about succession positioning ahead of the next Congress in 2027

This ascendancy is already unsettling established heavyweights. Vice President Constantino Chiwenga and ZANU‑PF Secretary for Information Christopher Mutsvangwa are considered among those whose influence could be threatened.

Critics have responded sharply to Tagwirei’s growing influence. Former finance minister Tendai Biti warned that Tagwirei becoming president “would be a total disaster,” describing him as “a blank, totally vacuous comrado elite”

Similarly, ex-party member and war veteran Blessed “Bombshell” Geza has accused him of corruption, claiming Tagwirei is part of a “zvigananda” cabal enriching a bourgeois clique within ZANU‑PF

Many see the strategic vehicle giveaways as a form of patronage planting seeds of loyalty among powerful figures.
