Tanzania and Zimbabwe have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking a step towards strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation in the defense sector. The agreement was formalized in a ceremony held in Dar es Salaam yesterday, attended by top officials from both nations.
During the signing ceremony, Tanzania’s Minister of Defence and National Service, Honourable Dr. Stergomena Lawrence Tax emphasized the importance of sharing a collective history rooted in mutual struggles for liberation.
“Today marks a truly significant milestone in the relationship between our two countries. It is with great pride and a deep sense of shared purpose that we come together to concretize our commitment to peace, security, and prosperity,” she stated
The MoU aims to enhance cooperation in various areas of the defence sector, including intelligence sharing, joint military exercises, and the exchange of military technology and skills.
Dr. Tax highlighted that these initiatives would enable both countries to adapt to the ever-evolving security landscape and strengthen their operational capabilities.
“By investing in technology, we enhance the capability, effectiveness, and efficiency of military operations,” she added.
The partnership was also framed within the context of contemporary global challenges facing the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union (AU).
“Issues such as terrorism, cross-border crimes, human trafficking, and environmental crises affect us all. In addressing these complex challenges, we recognize that no single country can tackle them alone. It is only through cooperation and aligned strategies that we can effectively safeguard our people and our sovereignty,” Dr. Tax noted.
Appreciating the historical ties between the nations, Dr. Tax stated that the signing of this MoU is a continuation of the aspirations of the founding fathers, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere of Tanzania and Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe.
As the ceremony concluded, Dr. Tax called upon all parties involved to embrace this MoU as a new chapter in their friendship.
“Let this agreement stand as a testament to our enduring friendship and our shared commitment to peace, stability, and progress,” she urged.
This new partnership between Tanzania and Zimbabwe signals an important commitment to regional security and is expected to have far-reaching implications for the stability of the Southern African region.
