Johannesburg, South Africa — A fierce exchange of words on social media has erupted between rapper Cassper Nyovest and Maskandi musician Mthandeni SK, culminating in a surprising challenge for a boxing match.

What ignited this unlikely feud? A heated debate over the recent South African Music Awards (SAMAs) and the outcome for the popular song “Water” by Tyla.

Initially, Cassper expressed his frustration on social media regarding Tyla’s snub at the SAMAs, particularly for the Record of the Year title.

“No way. Tyla won a Grammy for Water, but she doesn’t get the Sama for Record of the Year at home? Ha ha, y’all are playing games,” he tweeted.

Mthandeni SK, a prominent figure in the Maskandi genre, quickly responded, taking offense at Cassper’s comments. In a pointed Zulu reply, he accused Cassper of trying to exploit the Maskandi scene for relevance.

“uCassper Nyovest yilabafan abasindwa zikhindi le ko Hip Hop uzovuka ngathi la Ku Maskandi ngizolishaya lelidada…” translating to, “Cassper Nyovest is like those boys in hip hop who are out of place. Now he wants to mix with us here in Maskandi, but I’ll teach him a lesson.”

As the exchange heated up, Cassper shifted the discourse from music to the boxing ring, inviting Mthandeni to settle their differences through a match.

“Mthandeni SK, I’m sorry if my comment offended you. Tyla’s song was a major hit and deserved the title. I’m not here to act tough, but I do enjoy boxing, so if you’re up for it, we can take this to the ring. Nka go kwala matlho (I can close your eyes)!” he challenged.

Mthandeni, however, was quick to dismiss the boxing challenge, offering a curt and dismissive reply: “Uthini waympisi lombhem mina angimuzwa,” which translates to, “What is this hyena saying? I don’t understand him.” His reaction suggested a lack of interest in engaging with Cassper outside the realm of music.
