A Beitbridge resident accused of being a member of a gang that stole a Toyota Fortuner car eventually sold in Mozambique but strangely recovered appeared briefly before a Beitbridge magistrate on Wednesday.
Tawedzegwa Hove of Dulivhadzimu High Density Suburb was was not charged but was sent back for further police after resident magistrate Patience Madondo granted a police application for further detention.
Police are still interested in accounting for other suspects who may have worked with Hove.
Clad in a blue-grey hooded sweater, a handcuffed Hove appeared relaxed and far different from the subdued figure he was in a viral video where he was held captive confessing being part of the gang that stole the car.
He sipped an energy drink as he stood at the forecourt of entrances to the small makeshift and main courts at the provincial magistrates court.
While very little detail as been released, it is understood he sustained serious back injuries when he was held by unidentified people in South Africa who later under yet unclear circumstances.
He is expected back at court on Friday.
