WELLTON Group of Schools produced strong performances in rugby and hockey during the Winter Festival held at Whitestone School on Saturday, 23 May.

The schools rugby boys won against REPS, Kyle and Gold ridge, drew against Petra but lost against Whitestone school

Welton opened the tournament with a heavy 15-0 defeat to hosts Whitestone before bouncing back with a dominant 30-5 victory over Reps.

The team later drew 5-5 against Petra College Junior and edged Kyle Prep 5-0 in another exciting match.

Wellton Group of Schools also aged Goldridge 15-10 in onother side of the exiting victory

Wellton Group of Schools Rugby coach Munashe Ziwewe praised his players for their fighting spirit after the tournament.

“The first match against Petra was tough and ended in a draw after we defeated them in our last meeting,” said Ziwewe.

“Going forward we played skillful rugby and I thank the players for listening to me,” he said.

Wellton Group of Schools first team captain Daniel Mugugu said the games were difficult but the team managed to recover strongly.

“The games were harsh but we managed to come back and ended up winning many games,” said Mugugu.

In hockey, Wellton Group of Schools girls lost 0-1 to Petra School before suffering a 2-0 defeat against Whitestone

The girls responded well with a 2-0 win over Morning Star Academy.

Wellton Group of Schools hockey coach Vimbai Sibanda applauded her players for showing determination and sportsmanship throughout the festival.

“We are happy to be here and the girls played very well,” said Sibanda.

“Although we lost our first game to Chisipite, the girls displayed great sportsmanship,” she added.

Wellton Group of Schools hockey captain Miranda Dube said the team will continue working hard ahead of future tournaments.

“The matches were tough but we managed to beat Morning Star,” said Dube.

“We lost some games but we will continue training to do better next time,” she said.
