A woman who described her life as a “daily nightmare” due to persistent verbal abuse by her housemate has been granted a protection order by a civil court.
Perpetual Butu appeared before Magistrate Mponesi Kaweni on Monday, January 19, 2026, seeking a protection order against her fellow tenant, Hasedin Moto.
Butu told the court that she had endured months of emotional distress, public humiliation, and damaging accusations that she said destroyed her peace and dignity.
She testified that Moto repeatedly insulted her, used degrading language, and spread harmful rumours about her character.
According to Butu’s testimony, Moto went around telling people that she had sexually transmitted diseases, labelled her a prostitute, and openly circulated these claims in an effort to force her out of the house.
“I no longer have peace. She shouts at me, insults me, and tells people lies about me,” Butu told the court. “I just want her to stop and let me live in peace.”
Moto did not oppose the application and informed the court that she had no objection to the protection order being granted.
In his ruling, Magistrate Kaweni granted the protection order and ordered Moto to immediately stop insulting, harassing, or verbally abusing Butu.
