As part of preparations to host the upcoming COSAFA U17 tournament, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has unveiled its U17 national squad selection strategy and named the four coaches who will guide the team.
ZIFA confirmed that the squad will be led by former Bulawayo Chiefs coach Thulani Sibanda, assisted by Norman Edward, Backlyfield Chivenga, and Jatson Maphosa.
The coaching team will conduct a nationwide talent identification and assessment programme for the U17 selection.
“The coaches will embark on a nationwide tour from 18 to 20 August 2025, assessing players shortlisted for the U17 Boys squad. The process will prioritise technical skills, physical ability, and the right mentality to compete at the highest level,” ZIFA stated.
The top three teams at the COSAFA U17 2025 tournament will automatically qualify for the U17 Africa Cup of Nations, which also serves as the African qualifiers for the FIFA U17 World Cup.
Zimbabwe last won the COSAFA U17 championship in 2007, defeating rivals South Africa in the final.
