Havana – Zimbabwe and Cuba have formalized a partnership to preserve the historical legacy of the Cuito Cuanavale battle, a pivotal moment in the fight for liberation in southern Africa.  The Institute of African Knowledge (INSTAK) and the National Council of National Heritage of the Republic of Cuba signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on June 10th in Havana.

The agreement outlines the transfer of military equipment used in the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale to the Museum of African Liberation in Harare, Zimbabwe.  The momentous battle, fought in Angola in the 1980s, played a crucial role in the anti-colonial struggle.

The MoU was signed by Ambassador Kwame Muzawazi, Chief Executive Officer of INSTAK, and Ms. Sonja Perez Mojena, Director-General of the National Council of National Heritage.  The document formalizes the collaborative efforts between the two countries to ensure the artefacts’ safe and proper transfer and display.

“This agreement signifies a powerful commitment to sharing history and preserving the memories of those who fought for freedom,” stated Ambassador Muzawazi.

“The transfer of these artefacts will provide a valuable educational resource, highlighting the common struggles and victories of African liberation movements,” he added

Ms. Perez Mojena echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of the battle.

“We are proud to partner with Zimbabwe in this endeavor, ensuring that the sacrifices made during the Cuito Cuanavale battle are remembered and celebrated,” she stated.

The agreement also details the coordination between the two parties in the context of broader Pan-African initiatives, suggesting further collaboration in the future.  Specifics regarding the transfer timeline and the nature of the artefacts to be transferred were not immediately available.

The Museum of African Liberation in Harare is expected to benefit from this collaboration, adding to its collection of historical items relating to the African liberation struggle.
