Zimbabwe alongside other African countries face an urgent 60-day deadline to rectify various “deficiencies” identified by the United States government, or risk being subjected to strict travel restrictions, alongside 40 other nations under a proposed expanded travel ban.
An internal memorandum, recently leaked and reviewed by multiple U.S. media outlets outline a draft proposal that categorizes countries into three tiers:, red, orange, and yellow.
Zimbabwe has been placed in the “yellow” category, meaning it must engage with U.S. authorities and address the concerns raised, or it could find itself shifted into the more serious red or orange categories, which come with severe consequences for citizens looking to travel to the United States.
If moved to the red list, citizens from Zimbabwe would face an outright travel ban, while the orange category would impose severe restrictions on visas for immigrants, tourists, and students.
The memo signifies a shift in U.S. immigration policy under the Trump administration, with a focus on heightened scrutiny and potential travel limitations for a broader range of nations.
The countries in the red list include high-risk nations such as Afghanistan, Iran, and North Korea, while the orange list features countries like Russia and Pakistan.
Currently, the White House has not issued an official statement regarding this proposed categorization or the internal memo, leaving many citizens and leaders alike in a state of uncertainty.
The potential changes are still subject to approval by U.S. officials, and the administration’s decision could have lasting impacts on Zimbabwe’s international standing and its citizens’ opportunities abroad.
