As he commissioned the Zimplats’ Smelter Expansion and Phase 1A 35MW Solar Plant milestones within the company’s 1.8 expansion programme, President Emmerson Mnangagwa praised the holistic approach to and responsible mining being practised by Zimplats dubbing the project a source of pride and joy.
The towering project remains a model for other mining companies in the country to follow as the economic and social impact is there for all to see. It is remarkable that Zimplats is forging ahead with implementation of the project against the background of depressed international PGM prices and the guest of honourwas beaming.
” It is also with great pleasure and a deep sense of pride that I address you today to celebrate a remarkable milestone in Zimbabwe’s quest for industrial advancement, energy self-sufficiency, and environmental sustainability, as outlined in our Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy (NDS) 1, and the ongoing consultations for NDS2,”said President Mnangagwa.
He heralded the two commissioned projects as an indication of the power lying in working together by various players including Government and industry among others for development.
” These projects are a testament to the strength of collaboration between the Government, industry, and the communities, bringing about tangible economic benefits, including jobs, foreign currency savings, fiscal contributions, and advancing the adoption of green and clean energy sources by our industry. “
With the expansion valuing community development and involvement, Zimplats has not only improved national infrastructure but overall economic growth and empowerment of local communities and the President has commended the company for that holistic approach to its mining activities.
“I am pleased to see that ZIMPLATS has remained committed to the principles of responsible mining, ensuring that the environment is protected and that communities benefit from their operations. The company has achieved remarkable success in the mining industry. Its investment in technology, research, and development has allowed it to remain at the forefront of the industry, while its community development initiatives have improved the lives of many people in the communities where it operates and beyond.”
He also witnessed the handing over of share certificates to traditional leaders involved in the Mhondoro Ngezi, Chegutu Zvimba Community Share Ownership Trust whose share ownership has been increased from 5% to 10%, a testament to the company’s commitment to share resources with the community within which it operates.
The smelter expansion will increase Zimplats concentrate processing capacity to 380 000 tones per year, tripling the company’s previous capacity while the US$ 37 million and 109 hectare sitting Solar Phase 1A will meet 12 % of electricity requirements for the blue chip platinum miner.
