THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Family Week, which began on Monday and runs until Sunday, has drawn strong attendance in Beitbridge, with hundreds of families visiting their incarcerated relatives.

Held under the theme “Rehabilitation – A Collective Responsibility,” the annual programme allows families, friends, and siblings to visit inmates at various prison stations between 9AM and 3PM throughout the week.

During a Thursday visit to Beitbridge Prison, Ziyah News Network witnessed inmates spending quality time with their families sharing meals, dancing to music, and enjoying braai activities. Up to ten visitors per inmate are permitted daily.

All prisons in Matabeleland South are participating, including Beitbridge Prison, Gwanda Prison, Plumtree Prison, Filabusi Prison, Kezi Prison, Esigodini Prison, Beitbridge Farm Prison and Gwanda Farm Prison.

Speaking to Ziyah News Network, Beitbridge Prison’s second-in-charge, Chief Correctional Officer Kudzai Makoni, said the turnout had been overwhelming.

“We have had great attendance since Monday. Families have really embraced this week, and we appreciate the positive spirit,” he said.

“We also received visits from other stakeholders and church organisations who offered motivational talks and support. No one was left behind, even inmates who did not have visitors,” he said

Makoni said he expects attendance to increase as the week draws to an end.

Visitors are required to bring their national identity documents before entering prison premises. While cooked food from outside is prohibited, food and refreshments are available for purchase inside the facilities.

“The visits are open to everyone,” Makoni said.

“We encourage the public to follow the guidelines so the programme runs smoothly,” he said

He emphasised the importance of partnerships in strengthening rehabilitation and reintegration initiatives.

“As ZPCS, it is our mandate to support successful offender reintegration,” he said.

“We call on stakeholders to assist in linking offenders with society and to partner with us in programmes that promote rehabilitation.”

Makoni also expressed gratitude to organisations and community groups that contributed during the week.

“We sincerely thank all stakeholders who partnered with us this year. Their support goes a long way in restoring hope and dignity among inmates,” he said.

The Family Week continues until Sunday across all participating prison stations.
