Beitbridge — In a decisive move to combat illegal gambling activities, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), in partnership with the Local Lottery and Gaming Board, carried out a targeted operation at Mashavire Shopping Center, where they destroyed numerous illegal gaming machines publicly.

The initiative aims to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of illegal gambling and to reinforce the importance of lawful gaming practices.

Speaking to Ziyah News Network, Bornwell Madhake, the Financial Controller standing in for the Interim Secretary of the Lottery and Gaming Board, emphasized the significance of the operation.
“This initiative is aimed at making the public aware of the harmful effects of these illegal gaming machines, paving the way for a thriving and legitimate gaming industry in Zimbabwe,” Madhake stated.

“Illegal gaming undermines legitimate operators and erodes the integrity of our law enforcement efforts. We chose a route of integrity over exploitation hope over harm.”

Madhake further explained that ownership of gaming machines must be lawful, requiring registration and licensing through the Lottery and Gaming Board.

“Anyone wishing to operate gaming machines must register them and obtain proper licenses. These machines should be placed in designated areas authorized for such purposes,” he added, urging the public to comply with legal procedures to ensure a fair and safe gaming environment.

In addition to the vandalization, law enforcement authorities have intensified their crackdown on illegal operations. Melusi Ncube, the Officer commanding Beitbridge Police, confirmed that the ZRP conducted a series of blitz operations resulting in the confiscation of over 84 illegal gaming machines.

Ncube highlighted that the crackdown was driven by public concern, noting, “This operation was in response to community tips alleging that children and vulnerable individuals were involved in illegal gambling activities. We responded promptly because protecting our youth and society is our top priority.”

He further commended the community for their vigilance.

“We appreciate the tip-offs from citizens, which have been instrumental in fighting illegal gambling. We urge the public to continue cooperating and to refrain from participating in these unlawful activities, as they can lead to addiction and societal harm,” Ncube warned.
