Harare — The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched investigations into a disturbing viral video showing school children in a suspected case of sexual abuse.
In a statement, the police said, “The ZRP has noted a viral sexual abuse incident involving school children which occurred recently. The ZRP has dispatched a team to conduct comprehensive investigations in connection with the incident. More details will be released in due course.”
The video, which has caused widespread outrage on social media, shows two adolescents in school uniforms assaulting a girl, also in uniform, in a bushy area. During the incident, the boys are heard referring to themselves as “mauto.”
In an update issued on today, the ZRP confirmed that it had traced those involved.
“Reference is made to the ZRP’s X post on 28/09/25 in connection with the viral social media post on sexual activities by Masasi High School, Marange students. The ZRP has located the complainant (17) and the two suspects, all aged 16. More details will be released as inquiries continue.”
Child rights organisations have strongly condemned the abuse, warning against further circulation of the footage as this revictimises the girl and violates her rights. They have also urged authorities to provide immediate support and counselling to the victim while ensuring that the perpetrators are held accountable.

Meanwhile, police have urged the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course. “Investigations are underway and appropriate action will be taken once facts are established,” the ZRP statement read.
The incident has reignited debate on the exposure of young people to harmful behaviours and the urgent need for collective action among families, schools, law enforcement, and communities to safeguard children from abuse.
