Harare – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has responded to a viral report by Securico Security Services claiming that armed robberies in Zimbabwe are “out of control.” The report appeared in The Daily News on 22 August 2025.

In a statement on 27 August 2025, the ZRP emphasized that only the police have the constitutional mandate to investigate and release national crime statistics. Private security companies and individuals issuing their own crime data can create confusion, alarm, and panic among the public, businesses, and potential investors.

Official figures show that from January to 21 August 2025, the ZRP arrested 531 robbery suspects, with 206 convictions. Recent arrests include Tinashe Nkomo (aka Sadamu or Jeck, 39), Future Moyo (35), Decent Moyo (35), Obey Chiware (38), Wiseman Muleya (30), Tendai Mapira (45), Khumbulani Mabhena (42), and Admire Charumbira (36) in Beitbridge, and Wellington Chamunorwa (35) and Jacob Sibanda (aka Shumba) in Harare.

The police stressed the importance of collaboration with private security firms, which play a vital role in cash-in-transit operations, corporate security, and residential protection. Security companies are encouraged to coordinate regularly with the Commissioner-General’s office to prevent unnecessary public alarm.

Additionally, the ZRP announced a nationwide awareness campaign targeting corporate offices, communities, churches, families, and individuals. The campaign aims to educate the public on personal and business safety, including avoiding keeping large sums of money at home or on business premises.

“Private security companies and individuals are urged to engage the Commissioner-General’s office regularly to share notes and avoid causing panic among Zimbabweans,” the statement concluded.
