As the the worrying trend of accidents at railway level crossing continue in the country, a lorry carrying sand collided with a train at a rail/road level crossing in Kadoma last night after the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The National Railways of Zimbabwe said the driver lost control at around 23:50 hrs as it approached the level crossing.

“The driver of the vehicle lost control of the vehicle as it approached the level crossing at 2350hrs,” notes the NRZ.

 The driver and his passenger are said to have jumped to safety before the lorry crashed into the passing train’s last two wagons. Both men received minor injuries and were discharged from the hospital after treatment.

The incident comes hard on the heels another one in Harare weresix people were seriously injured when the vehicle they were traveling in collided with a train in Harare on May 21.

The incident occurred early in the morning when the driver of a Honda Fit attempted to pass a level crossing at Chiremba Road in front of an approaching train, resulting in the collision.

Recently on May 13, a police Mahindra vehicle was badly damaged in Gweru after the driver failed to give way to an oncoming train. The two police officers in the vehicle survived with minor injuries.

The NRZ continues to urge all drivers to approach such crossings carefully and to avoid using vehicles that are defective or poorly maintained.

“We keep urging drivers to exercise extreme caution when approaching all level crossings and avoid using defective vehicles.”
