Bulawayo— Residents of Mpopoma’s Ward Nine are battling a severe bed bug infestation that has turned their lives into a nightmare of constant itching, sleepless nights, and frustration.
The infestation has taken hold in Block 46 and the flats behind Patapata Beer Garden, with residents reporting a growing problem that they say is spreading rapidly.
After months of hearing about bed bug outbreaks in Harare through viral memes, the harsh reality has now arrived in Bulawayo.
Locals describe the situation as dire, with many too ashamed to report the problem openly.
“We’re pleading with the government for intervention,” one resident said.
“We’ve reported this to the Bulawayo City Council, but they told us we need to pay US$47 per household for fumigation. Many of us can’t afford that,” another adde
Residents say repeated attempts to control the infestation have failed, and without professional fumigation, the bugs are nearly impossible to eliminate. The community fears reinfestation if the problem isn’t addressed collectively.
Bed bugs are a global menace, with outbreaks reported in cities worldwide. During the 2023 Fashion Week in Paris, hotels and trains were crawling with the pests. Major cities including New York, Chicago, London, Johannesburg, Mumbai, and Sydney have also seen outbreaks in homes, hospitals, cinemas, and transportation systems.
Experts warn that once bed bugs take hold, eradication requires professional fumigation and community cooperation. However, the high costs and social stigma often prevent effective action, leaving many households vulnerable to ongoing suffering.
The situation in Bulawayo highlights the urgent need for government intervention, affordable pest control measures, and public awareness campaigns to combat this growing crisis which began in Harare’s Mbare.
