Beitbridge District stole the show at the Under-20 Inter-District Junior Championship Games, walking away with the lion’s share of titles as the curtain came down on the highly competitive two-day sporting event.

The championships, officially opened by the Minister of State for Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Albert Nguluvhe, saw under-20 athletes from across the province converge in Beitbridge to compete in football, volleyball, handball, and netball.

Beitbridge athletes proved unstoppable in several disciplines, winning the boys’ and girls’ handball titles, the boys’ volleyball trophy, and the boys’ football crown. Their girls’ teams also shone brightly, leaving the hosts as the most decorated district of the tournament.

Other winners included Matobo District, which scooped the girls’ volleyball and girls’ football titles, while Gwanda District clinched victory in netball.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Minister Nguluvhe applauded Matabeleland South for its stellar performance, describing the it as a “shining beacon of sporting excellence.”

“I am filled with pride and admiration for the incredible displays of athleticism, teamwork, and sportsmanship, especially from our athletes who have carried the province’s flag high,” he said.

He went on to challenge parents and guardians to encourage children to take part in sport, emphasising that athletics build character, confidence, and patriotism, while also protecting young people from social ills such as drug abuse.

“Sport is more than just competition; it is about preparing our youth for life. It reduces stress, improves health, and teaches values that last a lifetime,” he said.

Nguluvhe also praised sporting legends such as Peter Ndlovu and Dr. Kirsty Coventry, noting that Coventry’s recent election as President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was proof that Zimbabwean athletes can break global barriers.

As the host and top achiever, Beitbridge District was hailed for not only providing a platform for the games but also proving its dominance on the field.

The Minister thanked organisers, coaches, and schools for ensuring the smooth running of the championships.

“I am filled with pride and admiration for the incredible displays of athleticism, teamwork and sportsmanship we have witnessed over the past two days. These games have been a celebration of excellences, dedication and passion,” Nguluvhe concluded.
