Death toll from the accident which occurred at the 222 kilometre peg along the Masvingo-Beitbridge highway on Tuesday morning has risen to seven, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has confirmed in a statement.

“The death toll from a fatal road traffic accident on the Masvingo-Beitbridge road has risen to seven, police confirmed today.” The accident occurred on September 3, 2024, at around 8:00 am at the 222-kilometer peg along the highway.

The police further informed that six of the victims in the accident have been identified  

“Six of the victims have been identified by their next of kin and have been named as: Farai Rateiwa, a 30-year-old man from Makoni, Rusape, Andrew Dembura, a 40-year-old man from Nyabonga, Zaka, Masvingo, Felistas Bhasitera, a 35-year-old woman from Nyabonga, Zaka, Masvingo, Isabel Dembura, a 9-year-old girl from Nyabonga, Zaka, Masvingo, Hilfrasia Dembura, a 6-year-old girl from Nyabonga, Zaka, Masvingo.”

The seventh victim is said to be a foreigner national whose identity has not been released and the police is urging urged motorists to exercise caution and observe all road rules and regulations to prevent such tragic accidents.

Meanwhile in another accident that happened early this morning. Three people died on the spot when an International haulage truck and a UD commercial lorry sideswiped near Chaka along the Harare-Masvingo highway early this morning.

The driver of the lorry succumbed to severe injuries while two women in the haulage truck cabin died when the vehicle was forced off the road, landing on its side.

According to eyewitnesses the driver of the truck fled the scene. Other injured victims were ferried to the hospital.
