The Municipality of Beitbridge has put on notice illegally run schools that have been sprouting in the border town compromising the education and safety of learners.
The warning comes as schools open for the first term of 2025 today.

“The Municipality of Beitbridge has noted with concern the mushrooming of schools operating without proper registration with either the local authority or the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education. The municipality and relevant stakeholders shall conduct a blitz exercise to get rid of unregistered schools,” said the Municipality’s Town Clerk Loud Ramagkapola in a media statement.

As they plan to deal with the unregistered schools, Ramagkapola called upon parents to work together with the council and educational authorities to weed out these malcontents compromising their children’s education.

“We strongly urge parents and guardians to ensure their children are enrolled in schools that are fully registered and compliant with all regulations as some individuals operate illegal schools that compromise the wellbeing, safety and education of our children.”

“Choosing a properly registered school guarantees a standard of education that meets both local and national requirements, safeguarding your child’s learning experience and future opportunities.”

The country had a schools deficit of 2600 as of 2024 making it difficult for parents to get placement for their children. It is this gap that is being exploited by illegal private schools which cut corners and start providing education sometimes under very filthy and unsafe conditions for children.

The Government has for long warned illegal schools moving around to shut them down but they always resurface as the need for schools is so high given the deficit.
