The people of Beitbridge came together at Lutumba Business Centre today to celebrate the country’s 45th independence anniversary, a moment filled with reflection, pride, and unity.
Although the main celebrations were held in Gokwe-Nembudziya, Midlands Province, the atmosphere in Lutumba was alive with excitement as locals joined in the festivities.
The event showcased a vibrant array of performances, including musical acts, speeches, traditional dances from inmates of the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS), and talented local bands. The diverse entertainment not only highlighted the country’s rich cultural heritage but also fostered a sense of community spirit among the attendees befitting of the occasion.
Beitbridge District Development Coordinator (DDC) Ms. Sikhangezile Mafu led the celebrations and read the Presidential speech.
In her address on behalf of the President to the district, she spoke of the importance of Independence Day, expressing pride in Zimbabweans as a united and hardworking nation that has achieved noteworthy milestones.
“From the household level to our respective provinces and the nation as a whole, we are overcoming challenges, breaking records, and achieving remarkable development,” she said.
Mafu acknowledged the ongoing challenges the country faces, including sanctions, setbacks from climate change, and global economic pressures.
“The ongoing sanctions, climate change-induced setbacks, global economic shocks, and efforts by those who wish to see us divided have not derailed our progress,” she stated firmly.
She conveyed optimism about the future, asserting that a higher quality of life and the vision of a prosperous upper middle-income society is within reach.
“Together as one people, we are building our motherland, brick by brick, and stone by stone,” she added.
Capitalizing on the theme of unity, Mafu highlighted the collective efforts of Zimbabweans across the country for demonstrating a commitment to the nation’s development and governance.
Additionally, she noted that this year’s celebrations are particularly meaningful, coinciding with the consolidation of Land Reform, which has included the distribution of title deeds to A1 and A2 farmers as well as veterans of the liberation struggle.
Furthermore, she mentioned that the government is intensifying efforts to regularize existing and new urban settlements, aiming to provide citizens with secure property ownership.

Attendees expressed their joy in participating in the commemorations, reflecting on the importance of Independence Day as a tribute to the sacrifices made by the nation’s liberation heroes.
Local resident Mr. Tafadzwa Kumalo shared his thoughts, saying, “We owe much to those who fought for our freedom. This day is an important reminder of our history and a celebration of the unity that has brought us this far.”
Another resident, Ms. Chiedza Magwenzi, added, “Today fills me with pride. It’s vital for our youth to comprehend the sacrifices made for our freedom. We must honor that legacy as we move forward.”
As the day of celebration came to an end, the spirit of unity and determination was evident among the people of Zimbabwe, reaffirming their collective commitment to building a brighter future together.
