Beitbridge, Zimbabwe – Ward 3 Councillor Takavingei Mahachi is calling on residents to actively participate in the upcoming 2025 budget consultations scheduled for October 12 and 13, 2024, at various locations including Tshidixwa, White Lodge, Siyoka, and Mabidi Suburbs. The consultations aim to engage the community in shaping the proposed budget for the 2025 financial year.
In an interview with Ziyah News Network, Councillor Mahachi emphasised the importance of community engagement in the budgeting process, stating that it is essential for good governance, particularly in local authorities that depend heavily on rates and bills.
“This platform allows us to ask the community about their budget priorities after explaining our current levels of expenditure, giving them time to digest the information,” he said.
Councillor Mahachi highlighted the need for ratepayers to be involved in future development plans for Beitbridge, stressing that inclusivity is vital.
“We need ratepayers to be part of any future development plans in Beitbridge for the coming financial year. Once there’s such inclusivity, it means that the local people will own the process,” he added.
The consultations will address specific community issues, focusing on determining the future vision of Beitbridge. Residents are encouraged to contribute their thoughts on resource allocation, which Mahachi identified as a priority for the local authority.
Following the consultation sessions, the councillor noted that a priority list would be presented to the council for announcement and adoption on the same day. Community members will then have an opportunity to review the budget and lobby for any amendments or objections before it is forwarded to the Minister for budget approval.
“If there are any priorities that remain unaddressed, we will seek permission to obtain a supplementary budget to accommodate the pending issues,” he assured.
Additionally, Councillor Mahachi mentioned that mid-year budget reviews will be conducted with the community and other stakeholders to ensure transparency and continued engagement throughout the financial year.
Residents of Ward 3 are encouraged to attend the consultations and make their voices heard, as their input is crucial in shaping the future of their community.
