George Charamba, the Deputy Chief Secretary for Presidential Communications, has publicly addressed the rampant speculation surrounding his job status, following a recent Cabinet reshuffle by President Emmerson Mnangagwa that fueled rumours about his potential removal.

Despite the swirling gossip, Charamba confirmed that he remains in his position and is currently serving as the Acting Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet.

In a statement made via X (formerly known as Twitter), Charamba firmly dismissed claims suggesting that he was on holiday amidst the ongoing rumours.

“Caught in the web of lies: I am not on holiday, has never been in the last decade or so. Currently, I am the Acting Chief Secretary until 10th January when I pass on the acting baton to Reverend Damasane. In view of developments in the Region, I am unlikely to go on leave at all. All it takes is asking, guys. That, in essence, is the pith of news gathering. Zvinganetsa here izvozvo????” he wrote, emphasising his ongoing responsibilities.

This clarification comes in the wake of significant changes within President Mnangagwa’s Cabinet and the security sector, which had included the reassignment of July Moyo to the Ministry of Energy and Edgar Moyo’s assumption of the Labour and Public Service portfolio and the retirement of Commissioner Godwin Matanga from being top man at the ZRP and the firing of Isaac Moyo from top post of the CIO.

The recent government changes prompted a surge of speculation on social media platforms, particularly X, where unverified claims suggested that Charamba had been forcibly retired.

Some posts alleged that he had retreated to his farm and that his departure was influenced by First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa and her sons.
