Three Chinese nationals have been fined by the Karoi Magistrates’ Court after being convicted of working in Zimbabwe without valid work permits.

The offenders — Li Taisen (30), Wang Jinyan (57), and Xia Lin (52) were found to have set up a camp and commenced alluvial mining operations along the Angwa River in Dete, Kazangarare, Karoi, between 25 and 28 July 2025.

On 28 July 2025, law enforcement officers moved in and arrested the trio after discovering they had not only contravened environmental management regulations related to alluvial mining but also failed to produce valid work permits authorising them to engage in such activities.

The court imposed a penalty of USD200 each, with a default sentence of two months’ imprisonment should they fail to pay the fine.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe underscored that this case highlights the continued enforcement of laws protecting both the environment and the country’s labour regulations.

Through the campaign #JusticeInAction, the Authority reaffirmed its commitment to “Combating Crime and Corruption”, warning that no offender will be spared, regardless of nationality.
