A local Non-Governmental Organisation, Maggie’s Unique Designs has hosted a craft training program for people living with disabilities in Beitbridge.
Sponsored by Culture Funds, the initiative aimed to equip participants with skills to create bracelets, necklaces, and waist wear using beads and string, providing them with an opportunity to generate income.
The event, which attracted a diverse group of participants, focused on imparting knowledge and practical skills that can help individuals build a sustainable livelihood.
Magness Ndlovu, the director and founder of Maggie’s Unique Designs, emphasized the importance of such programs.
“We are conducting these programs so that we will be able to assist people with disabilities to find something they can do on their own,” she stated.
During the training, Ndlovu and her team demonstrated various crafting techniques, explaining the significance of different patterns, colours, and shapes of beads. They highlighted the cultural relevance of these designs, particularly in relation to the Venda Tribe.
“The zigzag pattern for tshi Venda means that life is not always stable; you will go up and down,” Ndlovu explained, illustrating the deep connection between art and life experiences.
Simbarashe, a project coordinator from Culture Funds, expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the initiative.
“We are happy with the projects that we are funding, and the artists are really benefiting, as some are allegedly exporting their products,” he noted.
He encouraged participants to seize these opportunities to nurture their talents and explore their creative potential.

The event also featured a generous donation by Pick Nkomwa, the executive director of the Nkomwa Foundation Trust, a disability-led organization dedicated to uplifting and supporting people with disabilities.
Nkomwa donated sunscreen and crutches to two individuals, further emphasizing the importance of community support.
As the day concluded, participants left not only with newfound skills but also with a sense of empowerment and hope for their futures
Maggie’s Unique Designs continues to pave the way for inclusive community initiatives, demonstrating the transformative power of art and creativity.
