The Department of Learner Welfare under the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is urging the community to recognize and support children with disabilities in the district of Beitbridge.

This was highlighted by Andrew Mnikwa, the Learner Welfare Officer in the district, highlighted the urgent need for awareness and resources during a recent craft training program for people with disabilities.

Currently, there are over 168 children living with disabilities officially registered with the ministry. However, Mnikwa emphasized that this number may be just the tip of the iceberg, as many families remain silent about their children’s conditions.

“We know there are some children we do not know about, as their families are not vocal about them,” he stated.

One of the significant challenges these children face is access to education. Many are deemed ineligible to attend regular schools due to their conditions, which often require more specialized attention.

“This exclusion from education is unacceptable, we need schools specifically designed for children with disabilities so that they will also have access to proper education,” Mnikwa remarked.

In addition to specialised schools, Mnikwa called for the establishment of revolutionary centers in the district.

These centers would provide a supportive environment for individuals with disabilities, offering them the tools and resources necessary to develop their skills and talents.

“These individuals have unique talents and skills, what they lack is knowledge and access to the facilities that can help them thrive.” he added.

The call to action resonated with community members and local leaders, who are now urged to advocate for inclusive educational practices and supportive infrastructure for children with disabilities.

By fostering an environment of recognition and support, the whole district can work towards a future where all children, regardless of their abilities, have the opportunity to succeed.
