Zimbabwean businessman and socialite Sir Wicknell Chivayo has stepped in to assist veteran radio personality Simon Pashoma Ncube after the latter publicly shared his financial struggles in a heartfelt video appeal.
Ncube, known for his influential role in Zimbabwean radio, recently took to social media to express his desperation and seek help from Chivayo, who has a reputation for philanthropic efforts.
In the emotional video, Ncube candidly revealed his dire circumstances, highlighting the challenges he faces without the pension he rightfully earned during his years of dedicated service at the national broadcaster, ZBC. The video showcased Ncube on crutches, visibly struggling, which resonated deeply with viewers and prompted calls for assistance.
Responding to Ncube’s plea, Sir Wicknell took to his X account (formerly Twitter), sharing his emotional reaction to the video.
“Driven by love and sympathy… my attention has been drawn to a heartfelt plea after watching this heartbreaking video from Simon ‘Pashoma’ Ncube,” he wrote. Chivayo reflected on his childhood memories of listening to Ncube, describing the pain of seeing a once-celebrated icon now living in despair.
Chivayo noted the impact of illegal sanctions on the Zimbabwean economy, which have hindered many from receiving their rightful pensions, including Ncube. Chivayo expressed his determination to help Ncube, particularly given their shared roots in Chivhu.
In a generous gesture, Chivayo announced that he would provide Ncube with USD 20,000 in cash and facilitate the purchase of a single cab truck valued at up to USD 15,000 to support Ncube’s farming activities and improve his mobility.
He instructed Ncube to meet with his lawyer in Harare to arrange the assistance, emphasizing the importance of using the resources wisely for a productive future.
Chivayo’s message concluded with a call for unity and empowerment, urging Ncube to utilise his newfound resources to cultivate the land given to him by the government.
He expressed hope for a future video showcasing Ncube’s transformation and success in farming.
