Ghana is set to hold crucial general elections on the 7th of November 2024, with the incumbent President Akufo Addo‘s 8 year constitutional limit coming to an end.

The New Patriotic Party has been in power since multiparty democracy was introduced in the West African country in 1992. The NPP’s current vice president Muhamudu Bawumia is the party’s presidential candidate for the elections whose outcome is likely going to be influenced by the economy.

Ghana‘s elections are coming at a  crucial time when the citizens are heavily burdened by high rate of unemployment, and looking for a leader who will address the country‘s economic depression .Vice President Bawumia will face stiff competition from the Ghana‘s main opposition leader former president John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress.

Meanwhile former president Mahama heavily developed Ghana’s infrastructure during his 2012/17 reign, however his reign also experienced power shortages and economic instability.

Fast forward to 2024, he is now the main contender challenging the ruling party.

What could be intriguing in this election is that the two main protagonists have held high positions in the governance of the country and will have institutional memory on their side as they seek to replace the outgoing Akufo Addo.
