The Zimbabwean sports community is mourning the tragic death of professional golfer Morton Kombai, who lost his life in a devastating car crash just hours after the conclusion of the 2025 FBC Zimbabwe Open in Harare.
Kombai, a dedicated member of the Zimbabwe Professional Golfers Association (ZPGA) from Zvishavane and a representative of Roland Park, was involved in a fatal accident at the intersection of Samora Machel Avenue and Seventh Street. The vehicle he was traveling in, which carried five players, collided with another vehicle late Sunday night.
Kombai was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash left four other players seriously injured. Zimbabwean golfers Tonderai Masunga and Biggie Chibvuri, who was behind the wheel, as well as Victor Kachepatsonga of Malawi and Lucky Ayisa of Ghana, are currently hospitalized but are reported to be in stable condition.
The Zimbabwe Golf Association and ZIM Open Committee issued a statement expressing their shock and grief over the tragedy.
“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of Morton Kombai, a talented and humble golfer whose passion for the game inspired many,” the statement read.
“Morton’s dedication to golf and his integrity on and off the course made him a respected figure in our community. He leaves behind a wife and two children, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.”
The news of Kombai’s death comes amid a tournament that celebrated sporting excellence. The Zimbabwe Open concluded with Mexican golfer Luis Carrera claiming his first Sunshine Tour title, a highlight for many. Yet the joy of victory was tinged with grief as the golfing fraternity grappled with the loss of one of its own.
Kombai’s passing not only marks a personal tragedy for his loved ones but also serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictable dangers faced outside the game.
