The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has ignited public outrage after unveiling a sleek 3D model of a new flyover at the busy Simon Mazorodze and Willowvale Road junction in Harare, without providing a clear timeline for construction.
On Sunday, 12 May, the Ministry took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce that mobilization efforts are underway for the project, which aims to ease traffic congestion and improve road safety in one of Harare’s most congested areas.
The post featured a detailed 3D model of the proposed flyover, showcasing what the government claims will be a significant upgrade to the city’s infrastructure.
“Mobilisation is now underway in preparation for the construction of a Grade Separation Structure (flyover) at the Simon Mazorodze/Willowvale Road Junction, a key infrastructure project aimed at improving traffic efficiency and safety. We are pleased to share the 3D model,” the Ministry stated.
While the initiative has been welcomed by some as a step forward, many residents and transport experts have expressed frustration and outrage over the lack of clarity regarding the project’s timeline. Critics argue that the government’s vague announcement and the focus on visual representations rather than concrete plans raise concerns about transparency and accountability.
“This is another typical case of government showcasing fancy models without providing clear timelines or budget details,” said
“People have been waiting for years for real progress on infrastructure projects, and all we get are pretty pictures and vague promises,” another stated
Community members have also voiced concerns about potential disruptions during construction, environmental impacts, and whether the project will truly address the underlying issues of traffic congestion that plague the junction daily.
The Ministry has yet to specify when construction will commence, leaving residents skeptical about the project’s actual timeline and whether it will materialize as promised.
As Harare continues to grapple with traffic chaos, the unveiling of the flyover model has only added fuel to the growing public frustration with government transparency and planning.
