Communities around the globe today are celebrating International Day of Sign Language, marking the beginning of the International Week of Deaf People. This annual observance serves to raise awareness of the importance of sign languages and promote the rights of deaf individuals, emphasising their linguistic and cultural identity.

Celebrated since 1951, this initiative not only honours the rich diversity of sign languages worldwide but also advocates for the recognition of the rights of deaf people as integral members of society.

A key moment of this year’s celebration was a powerful address delivered by Dr. Joseph J. Murray, the president of the World Federation of the Deaf. His speech, which was delivered in sign language, underscored the importance of recognizing and implementing the Convention on the Rights of Persons with

Disabilities (CRPD).

“Striving towards a better implementation of the CRPD at the national level through the linguistic human rights of deaf people in view of the 20th anniversary of the CRPD in 2026. Sign up for Sign Language rights by working with your local and national associations to announce the achievement of a concrete goal for deaf communities today.” Dr. Murray stated,

The choice to deliver this speech in sign language is particularly poignant, demonstrating the very essence of the day’s celebrations.

As communities come together to honor International Day of Sign Language, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by the deaf community. The day calls for collective action to ensure that deaf individuals are afforded the same opportunities and rights as their hearing counterparts.

Celebrating sign language is not just about communication; it is about acknowledging the cultural heritage and identity of the deaf community, advocating for their rights, and working toward a more inclusive future. This resonates with the Second Republic’s mantra of leaving no one and no place behind.
