Lake Chivero, a vital water source for Harare the capital of Zimbabwe, is currently engulfed in a severe ecological crisis, as investigative reports reveal alarming levels of fish deaths and wildlife fatalities linked to the rampant growth of cyanobacteria.

The situation has been exacerbated by the City of Harare’s discharge of raw sewage into the lake, leading to widespread contamination.

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) confirmed the detrimental impact of this outbreak, stating that several species have already succumbed to the toxic waters.

In a press release, ZimParks reported the distressing deaths of four rhinos, three zebras, and four wildebeests, along with various fish species and birds, including fish eagles.

“Despite the best efforts of veterinarians from the University of Zimbabwe and our Veterinary and Capture Unit, the contamination has also resulted in additional fatalities among local livestock such as goats and cattle,” the statement noted.

In light of this unfolding crisis, ZimParks has initiated several measures to protect remaining wildlife, including the placement of salt blocks and game nuts in the park, as well as the establishment of artificial water points supplying clean water.

However, these interventions have proven inadequate, as animals continue to access the contaminated lake water.

ZimParks emphasised the need for a multi-faceted strategy to combat the pollution problem plaguing Lake Chivero, calling on government bodies and the local community to recognise the gravity of the situation.

In light of the incident, ZimParks is urging  stakeholders to advocate for better environmental practices to safeguard biodiversity in the region.

The current fatalities not only spotlight an emerging environmental disaster but also pose severe risks to both wildlife and livestock that depend on Lake Chivero as a primary water source.

It is noteworthy that the dam is also the source of raw water for the Harare City Council supplying its metropolitan colleagues in Epwort, Ruwa, Chitungwiza and Norton.
