After a prolonged dry spell spanning weeks and punctuated by a massive heat wave, farmers can heave a sigh of relief as most parts of the country have been receiving rains since Monday. The wet spell spell is anticipated to last until Christmas.
Today, even the dry provinces of Matebeleland have been reporting rains as forecasted by zimcast when it said, “Showers and thundershowers expected for most parts of Zimbabwe on Wednesday, mainly through the West, North-West and parts of the North in the morning and West, parts of the central interior and South in the afternoon. Heavy rains expected in some parts of the country.”
A local meterologist has informed the nation that despite the anticipated heavy rainfall, chances of flooding have dissipated but because of the heat experienced in the past weeks, the storms could be violent.
“Despite the anticipation of heavy rainfall exceeding 50mm in provinces like Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, southern parts of Matabeleland North, Midlands, and Masvingo, the risk of flooding is low following a recent dry spell. However, the heat that was over Zimbabwe for much of last week, should potentially lead to these storms being violent, with lightning, strong winds, and hailstorms in certain areas.
“Provinces of particular concern include Mashonaland East, Manicaland, Masvingo, Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, and the southern parts of Midlands. ”
The public is thus advised to be cautious and be on high alert to safeguard themselves in case of an emergencies that may be triggered by the rains
