Maggie Smith, one of the finest British stage and screen actors of her generation, passed away on Friday in London at the age of 89.

Known for her exceptional talent and various performances, Smith’s award-winning roles left an indelible mark on the worlds of theatre and film.

Her death, which occurred in a hospital, was announced by her family in a statement released through a publicist. The cause of death has not been specified.

Smith was renowned for her diverse and memorable roles, from a free-spirited Scottish school teacher in the 1969 classic “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” to the sharp-tongued dowager countess Violet Crawley on the acclaimed television series “Downton Abbey.”

 Over her celebrated career, she attained numerous awards, including two Academy Awards, three BAFTA Awards, and a Tony Award.
