Zvimba, Mashonaland West-Distribution of maize to some vulnerable families across the country in light of the EL-Nino induced drought  has begun in earnest with Zvimba East ward 10 being the latest beneficiary of the programme.

The government through the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare is behind the distribution of maize in various provinces as it moves to avert hunger.

Speaking soon after the distribution of maize at Herbert Chitepo Primary School on Sunday, Zvimba East ward 10 councilor Tafadzwa Kambarami confirmed that they are using data collected by the team from the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare to deliver food to the most needy families.

“We really thank the government’s pledge and commitment to guarantee food security for the people in my ward and as of distribution,we served the vulnerable population first basing on the list from the Ministry,”said Kambarami.

He also said people without the names on the compiled list should be patient enough as their issues are going to be resolved.

“I understand there are some who did not receive maize today because you are not on the compiled list there will be an option for we will always knock doors to the ministry so they will allocate us with enough and everyone will going to benefit,”added Kambarami.

Synodia Kawadza who  benefitted from the government maize distribution programme expressed her gratitude whilst urging those who did not yet benefitted to trust the process.

“Our Government is committed to ensure food security at household is achieved so according to what what seeing here everyone is  going to have enough in future,” said Kawadza.

Jestos Mazodza who also got his share from the distribution said he was happy with government’s swift response in response to the plight of the people.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared a national disaster to tackle the prolonged drought crisis with the President saying the country needs about two billion dollars to tackle hunger caused by low rainfall experienced in 2023-24 farming season and he said no Zimbabwean must succumb to or die from hunger.
