A 52-year-old man from Chinoni Village in Beitbridge facing an attempted murder charge was on Tuesday December 30, 2025 denied bail by Provincial Magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba.
Lazarus Moyo allegedly brutally assaulted a woman using an iron plough handle.
Moyo, who is under Headman Mabhidhi, Chief Sitaudze, was arrested on December, 29 2025 around 5am.
The State led by Willbrought Muleya alleged the incident occurred on 28 December 2025 at around 5pm at Sarah Muleya’s homestead in the same village.
Moyo allegedly went to the homestead armed with an iron plough handle and repeatedly assaulted Muleya on the head.
She lost consciousness during the the attack.
Muleya also sustained serious head injuries and is currently unable to speak.
She was initially taken to Beitbridge District Hospital before being referred to Gwanda Provincial Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.
Prosecutor Muleya opposed bail, arguing the accused poses a flight risk due to his previous connections in South Africa and the porous nature of the border.
“The accused is facing a very serious offence that attracts a custodial sentence, which incserious his likelihood of absconding,” reads part of the affidavit authored investigating officer Sergeant Denenga of the Zimbabwe Republic Police Beitbridge Rural.
The affidavit was produced in court.
Prosecutor Muleya also said Moyo could interfere with witnesses, who are his relatives and reside in the same locality.
The court, presided over by Regional Magistrate Charity Maphosa, heard that investigations are still ongoing and are expected to be completed by 14 January 2026, as police are awaiting the victim’s recovery to record her statement and obtain a medical affidavit.
Maphosa remanded Moyo in custody to January 14, 2026.
