Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana, has addressed concerns following the sighting of military tankers and vehicles on Borrowdale Road in Harare.
The appearance of these vehicles generated a flurry of activity on social media, with many Zimbabweans speculating about potential unrest or a coup.
Videos and images of the military equipment quickly spread online, leading to widespread panic among citizens. Some netizens even referenced statements made by self-proclaimed prophets, suggesting the possibility of a long-awaited coup.
In response to the uproar, Nick Mangwana confirmed the presence of military tankers in the area, clarifying that their movement was part of a scheduled exercise aimed at testing military equipment.
“There is a scheduled exercise to test equipment which is taking place today. Nothing to be concerned about,” he stated.
Additionally, Presidential spokesman George Charamba reiterated that the Zimbabwe Defence Force (ZDF) was engaged in routine maintenance exercises, emphasizing the importance of supporting the military.
“Support your Zimbabwe Defence Force, ZDF as it goes through the routine of ensuring all its battle systems are in tip-top state!!! #ZDF, KEEPING YOU SECURE AND DEFENDED!!!!!” he wrote.
Charamba further addressed concerns raised by Advocate Fadzayi Mahere regarding the nation’s stability, affirming that the ZDF only conducts such exercises during peaceful times.
“Armies do not hold such exercises because they are at war. Rather, the fact of not being at war creates time for such exercises.” He added a cautionary note
As tensions simmer and misinformation spreads, the government’s attempts to quell fears about military activities may not be enough to pacify a restless public. With historical precedents of political upheaval and the ever-watchful eyes of prophets, many citizens remain skeptical, questioning whether the exercises are truly routine or if they hint at more sinister intentions.
