PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has granted a month-long firearms amnesty for the voluntary surrender of firearms and ammunition, a move aimed at addressing rising concerns over illegal firearm possession and misuse.
The amnesty was announced by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) and will run from September 24 to October 25 this year.
The amnesty is in line with the SADC Protocol on Firearms Control, allows individuals to hand over unlicensed, unwanted, or inherited firearms and ammunition to their nearest police station without facing criminal charges.
“This is a rare opportunity for citizens to comply with the law and help reduce the risks associated with unauthorized weapons,” said the ZRP in a statement.
ZRP said investigations revealed many Zimbabweans continue to hold onto firearms illegally, some due to expired licenses, changes in occupation, or the passing of licensed holders.
Others have acquired weapons through informal means or inherited them without proper registration.
“The ZRP is urging all individuals in possession of such firearms to take advantage of the amnesty period. This includes weapons that may have been used in criminal activities, failure to comply, the statement warns, will result in arrest and prosecution under the Firearms Act,” said the statement signed by national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
The initiative is part of a broader national effort to promote public safety and ensure responsible firearm ownership. Authorities hope the amnesty will lead to a significant reduction in the number of illegal weapons circulating in communities.
Citizens are encouraged to visit their local police stations for verification and surrender procedures.
The ZRP has assured the public that all surrendered items will be handled with confidentiality and professionalism.
