THE Beitbridge Municipality will, like all other parastatals and Government departments, close its doors from the public leaving only critical services during he oncoming Heroes and Defence Forces Day holidays.
In a public notice from the Town Clerk’s office the Municipality said critical service departments including Engineering Services (plumbers), Security Services, Environmental Health, Health Services (Clinics), Fire and Ambulance and Finance will continue to offer the necessary services to the community.
“The Municipality of Beitbridge wishes to inform residents and stakeholders that council offices will be closed on Monday, 10 August and Tuesday, 11 August 2026 in observance of Heroes Day and Defence Forces Day,” said the notice broadcast by public relations official Raniel Ndou.
“Critical service departments including Engineering Services (plumbers), Security Services, Environmental Health, Health Services (Clinics), Fire and Ambulance and Finance will continue to offer the necessary services to the community.”
It said normal office operations will resume on Wednesday August 12 2026.
“We wish all residents and visitors a safe, peaceful, and enjoyable holiday,” it said.
Zimbabwe observes Heroes’ Day and Defence Forces Day as back-to-back national public holidays on the second Monday and Tuesday of August.
This year these holidays fall on Monday, August 10, and Tuesday, August 11 and are expected to be a hive of activity following the closure of schools this week.
The main national event takes place at the National Heroes Acre in Harare, featuring presidential wreath-laying and cultural galas.
In smaller settlements the gatherings are normally presided over by District Development Coordinators who read the Presidential speech as families visit their loved ones’ graves and lay flowers at Provincial and District Shrines.
Beitbridge has more than a dozen Heroes interred at the district shrine and ceremonies are expected at the place within Beitbridge Town’s Makakavhule Cemetery.
Elsewhere in rural areas across Zimbabwe the holiday is also dedicated to tombstone unveiling and other ceremonies in respect of the dead.
Heroes holidays are also a big contributor of accidents in the country and during the joint 2025 Heroes and Defence Forces holidays in Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwe Republic Police recorded 196 road traffic accidents, resulting in 24 deaths and 96 injuries.
This was a sharp increase from the 149 crashes, 16 deaths, and 77 injuries reported during the same holiday period in 2024.
For the upcoming Heroes’ Day and Defence Forces Day holidays, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says it has deployed massive manpower nationwide, implementing strict security, intensified roadblocks, zero tolerance for drunk driving, and a strong warning against road and livestock violations to ensure a crime-free break.
